- This is a long post, but you'll want to read it all... at the end there is a chance to win a good prize!
Okay,
I have a confession to make:
I am NOT a morning person...
you may all gasp as I hang my head in shame.
{I had contemplated inserting a photo of me in the morning here, then I realized I'm not that brave}
With friends at one of our favorite morning haunts |
Actually I think this is not much of a confession as I have shared this fact before here on my blog, but here I am sharing it again.
You see, the fact that I am not a morning person has bothered me ever since I can remember. You've all heard the saying I'm sure "early to rise makes a man healthy, wealth and wise." Well not me.
It's one thing that I would like to change about myself, but have tired numerous times in the past and have come to the conclusion that I am wired to be a night owl. However I am not willing to give up.
It's okay...
Since I have become a Mom and my kids have gotten older I have noticed that I've gotten "better" at mornings. I have a teenager that gets up every morning and goes to early morning seminary for church, (she is not a morning person either, I wonder where she inherited that trait ? *wink*) and 9 yr old twins that need to be up, dressed, fed and ready to go when the bus comes to pick them up.
I tell all of you this because, I've been asked to write about mornings AGAIN! I have to laugh because I think that someone is trying to tell me something. So now for the 2nd time you get to hear about my struggles with the "a.m.".
Tropicana asked me to write a bit about how I put the "good" in mornings... Since I'm not a morning person I've had to make a little extra effort to make my mornings GOOD... I have 3 kids that need me at 6:30 am so I had to figure something out.
Before I tell more about my mornings, I thought I'd share with you a couple of things I learned this week from the good folks at Tropicana...
-Did you know that every 59 ounce Tropicana bottle contains the juice of 16 oranges? I didn't...
-Did you know that the ONLY thing in Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice is ORANGE JUICE? I didn't know this... I was under the mistaken presumption that grocery store juices had loads of added sugar.. Tropicana does not.. there is NO added sugar or artificial sweeteners!!
-Did you know that it only costs .50 cents for an 8 ounce glass of Tropicana juice and that 8 ounces give you TWO servings of fruit for the day? I didn't know this either...I hate to admit but I rarely get all of my recommended fruit servings in per day. (I don't really like fruit, I'd rather drink it that eat it).
-Did you know that a glass of OJ contains, Vitamin C, Folate, Potassium, & Thiamin? Yep, there is a FULL days supply of vitamin C, and as much potassium as a banana.
Pretty cool I think... I was really most surprised about the no added sugar, and the fact that for only .50 cents you can give your family 2 of their servings of fruit a day.
I thought I'd share just a bit of what our family likes to do for breakfast... then ask for your ideas and suggestions!
note the OJ in the photo |
We LOVE to go out to breakfast... We are lucky that there are a couple of fun places where we live with excellent breakfasts. Now it's not really practical to do this more than once every couple of months, but it makes for a fun weekend activity when we do get to go.
Christmas morning 2008 |
So now here is where I need your help!
Not every day is a Holiday or practical for a breakfast out... so for those of you that ARE morning people, how do you do it? Please tell me, help a girl out!
What's your best tip for me to make for a good morning??? After I get the kids all off to school, I tend to crash a bit... so what's your trick or your routine? Do you make the beds, jump straight in the shower, or head to the gym?
What's the thing that you do to put the GOOD in morning???

We are not the healthiest family. Myself, husband and the girls usually skip breakfast or just grab something quick, but I do attempt to keep it good. Usually as we munch our cereal I at least try to include some fresh fruit or 100% juice with the meal.

I'm not a morning person either. My children are grown now and out of the house so I can be a little laid back. However, when I do have to get moving the shower wakes me up and motivates me to get going. Love to eat fruit and oatmeal in the morning. Oatmeal sticks with me all morning and into the afternoon. Thanks for the giveaway.

How fun Melissa to see you on an ad. I did even look at the ad said, I just saw your face and clicked! I am a morning person. But the best way to put the good in morning is with a routine that works. Also doing a few things the evening before, like straightening the house, setting out outfits, putting together backpacks with everyone's homework IN the bags.

I like to spend time with my boy doing learning activities after my older girl goes to school. Then we play and go about the rest of our day.

I find that my whole day goes SO much smoother if I get my butt right into the shower and get myself dressed and ready for the day. If I don't- if I stay in my jammies (which I always want to do), I tend to move slower, get less done, feel less productive in general.
A good breakfast certainly helps put some good in my morning. Something like oatmeal with fruit in it is excellent.
Thanks for this giveaway. {If needed, my email address is in my profile.}
I don't have kids but I do have things I need to do before I get ready for work (make coffee, walk dogs, feed cat, clean litter box, etc.) so I get it all done first as quickly as possible. Then I have 'me' time where I sit, enjoy my coffee and surf the web. After a set time I then shower and do the 'get me to work' routine. Don't know if that helps you or not though.

Facing the good in the morning is easer if sports are involved. Otherwise it's more of a take-with meal like yogurt or cereal in a cup with milk added.
I am also not a morning person. I set my alarm for about 20 min before I HAVE to get up, so I can hit the snooze a couple times and still be ok. When the kids were home, I also was pretty mellow about what they ate for breakfast. If they wanted pizza, ok. Cake? I don't see the difference between that and many cereals. As long as they ate, I was fine.
To put the GOOD in morning I go for a brisk walk
dvice12[at]gmail[dotcom]
I wake my kids up with a hug and a "good morning". Then while they get ready for school, I make their breakfast. They are old enough to do it themselves, but it gives us time to sit down and visit for a little bit before they dash out the door.

I am definitely not a morning person. Even if I am actively moving I'm not really awake until 10 am. What works best for me is having a regular routine. Then I don't have to do any thinking, I just keep moving.
Besides trying to make nutritious and delicious breakfasts, I try to put the 'good' in morning by pretending that I'm happy to be awake rather than wishing I were still in bed. A lot of times it really works and convinces not only the kids but me as well! Oh, and opening the windows to let the sun in does wonders!

I'm not a morning person at all, but my biggest hurdle is waking up and getting out of bed. After that it gets easier for me. So my tip is to get a wake up light that gradually gets brighter to wake me up gently. Plus I use the bird chirp option that's less jarring than the typical buzzing alarm.

What we do to put the good into morning is to plan ahead so we're not running around.
I like a hot cup of tea and my girl sometimes likes her smoothies. She makes them with frozen fruit, yogurt and OJ.
In the morning I take a few minutes to myself and do a crossword puzzle.
I am not a morning person either and I have to get three boys to their destinations and look professional for work by 7:30 (OUCH!)
Here's my tip:

Freeze the extras and I have a breakfast all the boys like and super microwavable fast...and better than the store bought variety.

I start every morning with breakfast.
Since the morning is usually the only "me time" I have, I usually take the first couple hours before I have to be out the door to get in my workout, which I usually combine by watching a favorite show I recorded the previous night or watching a movie while I exercise. It's a nice way to start the day on a fun note, while at the same time energizing me for the day ahead!

I would love to help you out but I am as far from a morning person as you can get and my kids are all teens-20's now so in my case it didn't get better.
I still have to get up at 6 to get the little one out the door on time, but we're more of don't look at me til I have had my coffee and it's about noon so I send them off with a have the best day possible (I tried the whole have a great day and get snarled at).
A couple things that help is doing EVERYTHING you can ahead of time including having quick grab and go smoothies & breakfasts (fruit cut and frozen, grab yogurt & juice and just have to dump in blender).
Hope you find something that helps- and if you do I'd be grateful if you'd share lol.

I like mornings started off with my kittys purring at my feet and spending time with them and a nice breakfast of eggs and whole wheat toast.
For me it's egg whites and Whole grain bread when possible, often in a hurry though.

Please don't laugh too hard...but I turn up the radio real loud and sing and dance to whatever is playing! It's fun

A cup of tea and a crossword puzzle, love those! :)
I start the day out with a good cup of coffee and a healthy breakfast. I save my juice for mid morning after I go for a walk.
